Panfish, bass are bitin’ in Central Florida lakes, rivers

Hello Folks,

The weather has been great and so has the fishin’. Folks are gettin’ on the water and havin’ a blast catchin’ panfish and bass.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that the folks in his area are catchin’ lots of shellcrackers in Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. Folks are also catchin’ lots of shellcrackers in the St. Johns River. You will need some red worms and crickets.

Once you locate a bed by smellin’ ‘em or lookin’ for a slick on top of the water, you should be able to catch your limit. So get the family and some red worms and crickets and go fishin’. Also I might add that some folks are still catchin’ some specks in Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. So if you want to catch some specks, get some minners and go catch ’em.

The bass fishin’ has been really good as well. Lots of bass are bein’ caught on the major chains and in our local lakes as well. The Butler Chain has been good for lots of schoolin’ bass. Look for the birds to be divin’ on bait fish and that’s where the schoolers will be. Use a shallow runnin’ crank-bait or a lipless crank-bait and you should be able to catch some nice bass.

Rick and I have been fishin’ John’s Lake for the last few weeks. The bass fishin’ has been good and we have had some good days on the water. On our last trip, we caught 19 bass up to 5 pounds each. Rick went by himself the next day and caught 12 more bass. He also caught a released a nice eight pounder as well. We have been catchin’ our bass on slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits and lipless crank-baits.

The Central Florida Bass Hunters had its annual Classic on Lake Okeechobee last weekend. Our own Bill Trevino and his partner Don Biddle won the Classic. They weighed in a limit of five bass each day. Their total weight for two days was 33.43 lbs.

Congratulations, Bill and Don, on your Classic win. The big bass of the tournament was caught by Ryan Fleck off RNF Marine. His big bass weighed in at 10.37 lbs. That big bass helped them to finish in third place in the Classic. Ryan told me he lost another big bass on Saturday that would have helped their efforts. As they say in fishin’, there is always another day.

The FWC has announced that they will be offerin’ a newsletter called The Florida Freshwater Angler. The purpose of the letter is to identify excellent Florida freshwater fishin’ opportunities. Also in this newsletter, they will be offerin’ relevant information that will enhance the quality of your outdoor fishin’ experience. You can go to FWC website and get the update on what’s goin’ on in Florida freshwater fishin’.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope to see you on the water real soon.

Tip of the week: go fishin’.

Save a few and good luck!
