As is the custom, the city of Apopka and the community of Zellwood each will host a special service on Memorial Day to honor those who have died in military service to our country.

Apopka’s ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at Edgewood/Greenwood Cemetery, 141 S. Edgewood Drive. The event will be co-sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10147.

The Zellwood event will start at 10 a.m. and will be held at Conquest Cemetery in Zellwood near the intersection of Yothers Road and U.S. Highway 441, just south of the entrance to Zellwood Station.

At both ceremonies, there will be special speakers and musicians who will honor the lives and legacy of those who have died in service in the United States military.

In the Apopka event, Mayor Bryan Nelson will be among those speaking and active in the ceremony.

At the conclusion of the service, those in attendance will be invited to place memorial flags at gravesites located through the cemetery. Boy scouts from Troop 211 will also put flags out at the cemetery.

Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served at the Apopka Community Center/VFW post home, 519 S. Central Avenue. The food is supplied, cooked, and served by the members of Boy Scout Troop 211.

In case of inclement weather, the entire service will take place at the VFW post home.

At the Zellwood service, members of Boy Scout Troop 639 will participate as they have done for many years, helping families place flowers and flags at the graves of veterans buried at Conquest Cemetery.

James Sursely of Apopka, a veteran who lost both legs and one arm in the Vietnam War, will speak at the Zellwood service. Sursely is also a past national commander for the Disabled American Veterans organization.
