Gene Knight, an Apopka native, said this week he will run for the Apopka City Council during the 2018 election. He made his intentions known publicly on Thursday, March 23.

Knight, who grew up in Apopka, said he will run for Seat 1, which is currently held by long-time Commissioner Billie Dean, who has not said if he is running for re-election.

Knight, 49, spent nine years in the Army. He has a Facebook page titled, Apopka Then and Now.

Also on Thursday, March 23, one-time City Council candidate Alice Nolan, a fifth-generation Apopkan, announced she will not run for a seat on the council.

In 2016, she unsuccessfully ran for a seat eventually won by Doug Bankson.

“My love for Apopka, as many have seen, runs deep, and is shown through the many hours of volunteering I do for our community,” Nolan said.

“I feel in my heart that my place in Apopka currently lies in my advocacy for its citizens and continued community service.”

The city election is scheduled for March 13, 2018, and qualifying is currently slated for January 2 through January 9, 2018.
