Holiday hours, events bring extra traffic to Lake Apopka North Shore

Visitors should expect additional traffic to Lake Apopka North Shore this coming weekend due to a marathon and holiday hours, the St. Johns River Water Management District announced in their Thursday, January 12, press release. Lake Apopka has grown in popularity for nature-based recreation.

On Saturday, January 14, the district-owned property is part of the mapped run for the Masters of All Terrain Ultramarathon. Runners will follow trails within the Lake Apopka North Shore. The event will take place 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On Monday, January 16 — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day — the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, which is usually closed on Mondays, will be open from sunrise until sunset in honor of the federal holiday.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is one of five districts in Florida managing groundwater and surface water supplies in the state. The district encompasses all or part of 18 northeast and east-central Florida counties. District headquarters are in Palatka, and staff also are available to serve the public at service centers in Maitland, Jacksonville and Palm Bay.
