Full moon has fish bitin’ in area lakes

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

The full moon was on Monday and that got the fish to bitin’. Folks are catchin’ plenty of specks in most of the lakes in our area. Some good lakes to catch some specks have been Lake Griffin and Lake Dora in the Harris Chain. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on jigs tipped with a minner. You need to use brightly colored jigs like chartreuse, lemon-orange or a gold ice jig if you find ‘em.

The specks are also bitin’ in Lake Monroe, Lake Jesup, and Lake Harney. You need to use jigs tipped with a minner. Some folks are catchin’ some specks usin’ a gold #2 hook tipped with a minner fished under a cork. Make sure that, if you use minners, put each pole at different depths until you see where the specks are located. Some folks are driftin’ the open water and just off the shoreline around the clumps of submerged hydrilla.

The bass fishin’ has been real good in most of the lakes in our area. Folks are catchin’ some bass on shiners in the Butler Chain. Most of the bass are bein’ caught by free-linin’ the shiners behind the boat. Just let the wind drift you over the hydrilla and eel-grass beds.

Rick and I fished the Butler Chain last Friday and caught and released 15 bass up to four pounds each. We caught all our bass on plastic worms. We did see a lot of bass beds, but no bass on the beds. We thought with the full moon this past Monday that the bass would be on the beds, but, as of now, there were no bass on the beds. I guess they are gonna wait until next month’s full moon.

This week, Rick is fishin’ his annual bass fishin’ trip with his brother-in-law Greg and his nephew Chris from Kentucky. They will be fishin’ all week in different lakes in our area. They started fishin’ this past Sunday and caught 18 bass in the Butler Chain on plastic worms. The biggest bass was about 3 pounds.

They fished John’s Lake on Tuesday and caught 19 bass on plastic worms. The biggest was about 2.5 pounds. Rick reported that they didn’t see any bass on the beds in John’s Lake either. Most of the bass they caught have been offshore around the submerged hydrilla beds and eel-grass beds. The bass are stagin’ and gettin’ a belly full of bait before they go on the beds. So if you want to catch some bass or specks now is a good time to go fishin’.

See ya next week. Tip of the week: go fishin’.

Save a few and good luck!
