A featured plant with properties similar to a well-known ointment and a local high school’s aquaponics lab are some of the highlights of the two-day 56th annual Apopka Art and Foliage Festival slated for Saturday, April 29, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, April 30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Kit Land Nelson Park.

About 100 artists and crafters will convene upon Apopka and join more than 20 area nurseries to participate in the festival, which also offers bus tours to local nurseries, foliage experts who will lend their horticulture expertise to visitors, a special art exhibit featuring student artwork, and more. There will also be plenty of food concessionaires on hand at the festival.

Sponsored by GFWC Apopka Woman’s Club and the city of Apopka, event admission is free.

Revenue from the festival will go to almost 22 local non-profit charities and provides scholarships for Apopka students. No pets are allowed per city ordinance.

Among the roster of entertainers that will perform in the park gazebo range from performance arts schools and elementary schools to local musicians and dance troops.

Children’s activities include catching butterflies in a netted tent in the conservation area, getting their faces painted, do a craft and crush ice using a machine for a snow cone.

On Sunday at around 3:45 p.m. the festival will draw to a close with a release of more than 400 butterflies of five different varieties.
