The city of Apopka and Phillis Wheatley Elementary School will host a special Bike to School Day event on Wednesday, May 10, with a tribute to former student Camari Dennison, who died riding his bike five months ago.

The event recognizing National Bike to School Day promotes bicycle safety and healthy benefits of riding bikes to school each day.

Activities include a bike ride around the school, bike helmet fittings by the Apopka Police Department, treats and goodie bags.

Afterward, students from first and second grades will join Apopka Mayor Joe Kilsheimer to honor Camari Dennison with a special tree planting and plaque presentation. Dennison’s kindergarten classmates will present a poem, and Dennison’s mother will give brief remarks.

Amscot Financial and BAM-B Enterprises, which operates McDonald’s restaurants on Main Street and Rock Springs Road in Apopka, are supporting the Bike to School event.

The Apopka Chief will have a recap of the May 10 event in the Friday, May 12, edition.
